UK2 launches new VPN service which protects customers by encrypting their data as they browse online, on any device and through any connection. The VPN service will also give customers the option to setup an IP address in a different location with the option to connect to that IP from anywhere in the world.
This Christmas hundreds of thousands of transactions will take place on mobiles phones in coffee shops, bars and shopping centres’ WI-FI connections on iPhones, iPads and laptops. Without knowing it hundreds of thousands of people are potentially sharing their private data, including passwords and card details, with hackers and fraudsters. To protect against this evil menace, UK2.net have launched a new VPN service which will help to increase online security as the VPN encrypts all data on any device and through any connection.
Browsing through an encrypted connection means that no matter where you are or what internet-enabled device you are using, all your online communications will be safe and secure giving you complete peace of mind.
Martin Baker, managing director at UK2, said: “With so much ecommerce now happening on mobile phones, people need to be more aware of the risks they run. All modern mobile phones come with the ability to use a VPN and in a few clicks using the UK2 VPN service consumers can browse safely and securely and experience a merry Christmas and happy new year.”
Safe browsing is not the only advantage of the UK2’s VPN. Customers are also able to choose one IP address and have multiple locations with the IP remaining the same at all times.
Through years of hosting experience and a reliable global network, UK2 are able to provide their customers with new and innovative solutions which cater for various needs. The new VPN is proof of this innovation as it addresses the need for more robust online security solutions moving into 2012. The service starts at only £4.95 and can be setup instantly after purchase. For more info on the VPN, please visit UK2’s website: http://www.uk2.net/vpn/

Facebook has announced this week that after months of testing, the Timeline profile page will officially be going live globally over the next few days.
Unlike most unwelcome Facebook updates this one isn’t immediate; users will have a few weeks to activate the timeline, after which they will have a 7 day grace period to tweak their Timeline, removing posts, ‘featuring stories’, or updating info, before the feature goes live for good. At any point during the 7 days users can manually publish their timeline if they want is to be visible sooner.
Facebook say “As you explore your timeline, you may see stories that you want to feature, like your graduation or the day you bought your first car. There might also be stuff that you want to remove or hide from your timeline. To feature something on your timeline, roll over the story and click the star to expand it to two columns. Or you can click the pencil to hide, delete or edit a post.”
The Timeline is split into two columns displaying your posts, info, photos etc. If you ‘Feature’ a post it will be stretch to cover both columns. (example below)
Users will start seeing an announcement when they sign in inviting them to switch to the Timeline, however, if you don’t see it and want to switch over now you can go to http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline and click ‘Get the Timeline’.
If you already have it, the bottom of the page will show your friends who have also signed up to the feature.

If you’ve been on Wikipedia.org recently you couldn’t have failed to notice Jimmy Wales# please for donations plastered across the top of the page. Well, across the top of EVERY page.

In his plea Wales writes “When I founded Wikipedia, I could have made it into a for-profit company with advertising banners, but I decided to do something different. We’ve worked hard over the years to keep it lean and tight. We fulfil our mission, and leave waste to others.
If everyone reading this could give just £3 a month, we would only have to fundraise for one day a year. But not everyone can or will donate. And that's fine. Each year just enough people decide to give.”
While the appeal from the founder may seem a little tasteless, it certainly seems to have worked as Google co-founder Sergey Brin has donated a whopping $500,000 to the Wikimedia Foundation.
The donation comes on behalf of the Wojcicki Foundation, an organization started by Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki (co-founder of 23andMe.com).
Sue Gardner, Executive Director for the Wikimedia Foundation, said today “This is how Wikipedia works: people use it, they like it, and so they help pay for it, to keep it freely available for themselves and for everyone around the world. I am very grateful to Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki for supporting what we do.”
According to Wales all donations will go towards 2 things:
-
Technology: Servers, bandwidth, maintenance, development. Wikipedia is the #5 website in the world, and it runs on a fraction of what other top websites spend.
-
People: The other top 10 websites have thousands of employees. Wikipedia is supported by only about 100 staff worldwide, making your donation a great investment in a highly-efficient not-for-profit organization.

When Google revealed that it would be retiring the + search operator, without too much explanation, it came as quite an unexpected and seemingly pointless shock.
However, Google’s latest announcement explains that the move was just another step in Google’s plan to unify its products into one platform.
With the introduction of Google+ Pages for brands came the revelation that the + operator will now be tied into searching for brands in Google Search.
Google has revealed a feature called Direct Connect which allows searchers to add brands to circles after finding them on Google. And how are they finding Google+ pages straight from search you ask? By putting the + operator in front of a brands name.
Vic Gundotra explains: “Maybe you're watching a movie trailer, or you just heard that your favorite band is coming to town. Just go to Google and search for [+], followed by the page you're interested in (like +Angry Birds). We'll take you to their Google+ page, and if you want, we’ll add them to your circles.”
These results are now at the top of the list of Google’s auto-fill options in the search bar (see image).
Google is still using the - (minus) operator but have replaced the + with highlighting; “Highlight common words and characters such as the and & if they are essential to your search (as in a movie or book title) by putting quotation marks "the" around them.”

iomart Hosting, one of the UK’s leading cloud computing and managed hosting providers, has taken Skyscanner, Europe’s leading travel search website, into the cloud to support its objective of becoming the number one flight search engine in the world.
Skyscanner specialises in cheap flights and deals on over 600 airlines, as well as prices for car hire and hotels. Visits to the Skyscanner website have increased year on year to the point where over 14 million people use it every month. To cope with this huge and ever-growing demand for its service, Skyscanner needed cloud hosting backed by the most powerful servers. It turned to iomart Hosting.
Craig Parker, Director of IT at Skyscanner, explains: “It’s vital that the Skyscanner flight search engine is always available because people are accessing it from many different countries at all times of the day and night. iomart Hosting’s support has allowed us to scale up as fast as possible, while still allowing us to serve our millions of customers in a professional, responsive and personal manner.”
iomart Hosting supports the entire global portfolio of Skyscanner domains, which range from Spanish (Skyscanner.es) to Japanese (Skyscanner.jp) and Korean (Skyscanner.kr). This is all housed in a private cloud, backed by an enterprise grade SAN solution.
Phil Dalbeck, Infrastructure Architect at Skyscanner, explains: “Migrating from a traditional physical infrastructure platform to a fully virtualised private cloud provides the business agility Skyscanner needs to support our exceptional growth. Capacity planning is no longer the headache it once was, and the business can now expect to see additional server resources deployed within minutes rather than weeks.”
The iomart Hosting team helped Skyscanner’s technical team deploy a cutting-edge VMware installation, with powerful custom built servers providing N+1 resilience and high performance. The database layer comprises a number of Fusion-IO equipped SQL Servers delivering previously unattainable I/O performance.”
Phil Dalbeck adds:“Our move to FusionIO completely redefined the capabilities of our presentation database systems – stability, performance and scalability have been improved by several orders of magnitude by leveraging the best technologies for the job. Working with a hosting partner prepared to work with us in deploying such cutting-edge technology is vital to our success.”
Sarah Haran, managing director of iomart Hosting, says: “Skyscanner demanded high performance and high availability plus the ability to react quickly to market demands by the provision of additional resources. iomart Hosting provided consultation and benchmarking services, procured cutting edge hardware which we installed in our fully-owned high-spec data centres, ensuring that Skyscanner and its millions of customers get the best service possible. ”
The Skyscanner cloud operation is housed in iomart Hosting’s data centres, where entire floors are provisioned with high power racks in cold aisle containment with dual A+B feeds to each rack.
Sara Haran says: “iomart Hosting and Skyscanner have a lot in common. We are both fast growing companies gaining worldwide reputations for what we do. iomart Hosting is proud to be providing hosting for Skyscanner as it aims to dominate in its chosen market.”
The Skyscanner website is available in 27 languages and is offered as a mobile site as well as both an android and iPhone app, the latter of which has had more than 2 million downloads
Phil Dalbeck says: “Skyscanner is a technology-focused business and our service is reliant on the stability of our datacenter equipment. iomart’s datacentre team has a no-nonsense, can-do attitude to support which takes away the pain of day to day hardware maintenance allowing us to focus on the bigger picture.”
iomart Hosting is a subsidiary of iomart Group plc which is ranked as one of the top 25 cloud services providers in the world by Talkin’ Cloud 50 and was named Scottish Digital IT company of the Year 2011.
